I am so proud of the dancers who performed in my new work, Always a Woman to Watch the Light. It is a piece about women and war, centered on a poem written by the french author Henriette Charasson when her brother, Cam was listed among the missing during World War 1 in 1915.
Someday, I hope to develop this into a multimedia work. More to come!
In 1967, dancer Marta Becket was on tour when her bus broke down in Death Valley, California. While waiting for repairs, she walked through the nearly abandoned town of Death Valley Junction. She looked through a hole in one of the buildings and discovered a stage. It was love at first sight. Marta never left. She performed on that stage, en pointe, until she was 80. In the Western world, our dances tend to idealize the youthful body. While I never had the chance to meet Marta in life, this film allowed us to connect across time. It became a conversation about what it means to grow older, especially as a dancer. There is ageism in dance, and that's a shame because it limits our understanding of the art form. The fact that the body is impermanent makes our use of it as our instrument of expression a demand for social change on the perception of aging. The body's impermanence, in strength and decline, is why dance is beautiful. We won't have our bodies forever. It is what we do with our time in them that counts. Marta and I dance our Dying Swan, which isn't a swan song. It is our transformation into the storytellers we were born to be.
In April, I was very lucky to be able to spend a few days in one of my favorite Parisian ballet studios in April! Alexia, Coralie and their amazing students always make me feel like I am home.

Berlin is an inspiring place. The architecture really pushed my way of thinking of form and how form has a voice that tells a story of a place and time.
But also how form can be reimagined to create a new narrative.
But above all, there is Lake Studios Berlin and the other residents who were always willing to share their practices, their experience and their honest input. And then there is this incredible audience that is willing to travel to the edge of Berlin to support the unfinished work of artists…even staying until 11 at night to give feedback! It is so generous! They taught me that the creative process can be a shared and collective experience. My mind has opened. My world has changed.

It was an honor to have my short dance film, Ophélia, selected for the Paris International Short Festival!!!
In August, I had the pleasure of teaching ballet and modern at Le Centre des Artes Vivantes! The students were a gift and Paris remains my favorite city to teach and to live. A dream come true!
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Angie Flanagan and I am, at heart, a collector of stories. I create both live performances and video collections that include dance, poetry and sound as a means to curate from the chaos the memories, stories, and the extraordinary in everyday life. I often explore poetry through different languages, most often French, as a means of exploring what can be understood, what is often misunderstood, and how image and gesture fill in the blanks. I believe the purpose of life is to discover the story only you can tell. We are all in the process of becoming, and my work is an homage to my fellow travelers and collectors on the journey of life.
I have been teaching and choreographing for 20 years, across the US, Paris and Berlin, and my happiest moments are in the studio experiencing the joy of movement. My classes combine Horton and Graham techniques with concepts from African dance and Flamenco, incorporating methods to unlock emotion, musicality, fluidity and a strong relationship to the ground. One of my missions as a teacher and choreographer is to exchange with other artists (in all fields). I seek to learn new mediums of teaching and choreographing with a goal to provide dancers of every age and ability the opportunity to not only train physically, but above all to discover methods of expression and to share a kernel of truth about the human experience.

Over Christmas, one of my favorite dancers came to visit and we got to reminiscing. We dug through old videos and rediscovered the piece I choreographed on her for the 2019 YAGP in Kansas City! With One Breath was inspired by a documentary I watched about free divers. They seemed to dance under the waves, so free and at home in a world as foreign as the moon...
This summer in Paris, I had the opportunity to study with the Japanese dancer and choreographer Juju Alishina! Click below to learn more about this inspiring woman, dancer and artist. I can't wait to work with her again.
